Community Structure Responding to Natural and Anthropogenic Variability

Disturbance and stress are ubiquitous, contributing to overall ecosystem malfunctioning greatly. Communities respond to natural and anthropogenic variability in a complex manner in ecosystem functioning. Community structure properties were examined with benthic macroinvertebrates collected in streams in Korea across different levels of pollution. The relationship between species richness and abundance was presented with the Power law: the parameter (α) was reported to be in a narrow range in 0.4 – 0.5 in the least polluted condition while the value was close to 0.1 - 0.2 in the severely polluted condition. Species abundance distributions (SADs) were also efficient in presenting community states in responding to natural (e.g., seasonality) and anthropogenic (e.g., pollution) variability. According to SAD models the pollution states were broadly divided into weak and strong pollution groups. Coefficients of variation in the SAD slopes were further suitable in dividing less and slightly polluted states within the weak pollution group. Within the strong pollution group, a mixture of log-normal distribution and geometric series separated polluted and severely polluted states for monitoring. Community structure properties would be an efficient method for addressing ecological integrity and could be a reference system in reflecting effects of natural and anthropogenic variability in stream ecosystems.
